About YMCA

YMCA stands for the “Young Men’s Christian Association.” Both the YMCA and the YWCA were established to provide low-cost housing in a safe Christian environment for rural young men and women who came to the cities. It was founded by George Williams and his friends who were concerned about the lack of healthy activities for young men in major cities in June of 1844 in London, England.

By 1851, there were YMCAs in the United Kingdom, Australia, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and the United States. From the 1870s through the 1930s, they had a big Christian focus.

Today they are more focused on inspiring youths and their families to exercise and be healthy. You can find around 2,400 YMCAs in the US as well as in 120 countries. Their headquarters is in Geneva, Switzerland. They have a Military Outreach Initiative with the Armed Services YMCA and the Department of Defense which offers gym memberships and respite child care services.
