Planning a family vacation can be a lot of fun. You know you will make some amazing memories. In addition, you will see parts of the country you haven’t seen before and let your children experience more of the world. Here are some of the best family vacations for military families in the US.

Vacations for Military Families in the US

Orlando, Florida

If your family loves amusement parks, you will love going to Orlando, Florida. There is so much to do there, you will need to stay for at least a week. Disney World will offer you a pretty amazing discount on either a 4-day or 5-day Park Hopper Pass. They also offer military discounts on select Disney hotels. Shades of Green is a unique resort for military service members and their families, right at Walt Disney World with affordable rates.

In addition to Disney, you can also go to Universal Studios Orlando, which includes three parks. You can get a military discount for 1-5 days, and for one of the parks, two or even all three. They also offer vacation packages which include a hotel stay.

Sea World Orlando is also a fun choice, and with the Waves of Honor Military Discount, you can get free tickets for the service member and up to three dependents.

Washington DC

If you are looking for an educational and historical vacation, you should take your family to Washington DC. There is so much to see pertaining to American history, and with many of the museums and tourist areas being free, can make for an affordable trip.

You will want to make sure to see the Smithsonian museums. There are 11 museums and galleries on the National Mall, as well as six other museums in the area, as well as the National Zoo. You should also make sure to take a tour of the many war memorials in Washington DC as well as Arlington National Cemetery.

With six major military installations in the area, you could find a cheaper room there, or look for military discounts on popular hotel chains. There is also public transportation so you might not need to worry about renting a car if you fly into Washington DC.

Southern California

Southern California would also be an amazing trip for any military family. If you happened to be stationed nearby, you can create quite the staycation too. In addition to amusement parks, you can also spend time at the beach, go to the mountains, take a tour of Hollywood and Los Angeles, or enjoy San Diego.

Disneyland also has an amazing military discount where you can buy a 3 or 4-day Park Hopper to go to both Disneyland and California Adventure. They also offer discounts at the Disneyland Resort hotels. You can use your Wave of Honor Discount at the Sea World in San Diego, and find other military discounts at amusement parks such as Knott’s Berry Farm, Legoland, and Six Flags.

You can find military lodging at many of the military installations in the area, or look for military discounts at local hotels. Renting a car may be necessary when you visit.  But that will also allow you to see more of the area, and go on a few scenic drives.

National Parks

Going to one of the 60 National Parks in the United States can make for the ideal vacation. Whether you just got back from a deployment and want time to bond with your family, or you are ready for a nature-filled time away, going to a National Park would be a good idea.

Military service members and their dependents can receive a free National Park Annual Pass, which is ideal for trying to visit as many parks as you can. You can camp, stay in a cabin, or even a hotel, depending on what works best for your family. Being in nature, exploring and hiking, and taking in the beauty of America will give your children memories that they will take with them for the rest of their lives. Veterans and Gold Star Families can receive a free Military Lifetime Pass.

Since there are so many National Parks, you can plan to go to the one closest to you, to your family, or even one of the more popular parks such as Yellowstone or Yosemite. If National Parks are good for your family, you can have a goal of visiting as many as possible over the years.

Beaches

Whether you want to go to the West Coast or the East Coast you can plan a beach trip. These types of vacations are more relaxing and might be exactly what you are looking for. You can find good-priced military lodging nearby many popular beaches in Florida, California, North and South Carolina, Texas, Georgia, Virginia, or any other coastal areas.

The best part of a beach trip is being able to spend time together in a relaxed setting away from home. You don’t have as much pressure to get out and see everything, and can spend lazy days on the water, or enjoy time in a beach cottage or even at a campground. There are many options on different military installations or local condos you could rent for a week or two at a time.

Before planning any vacation, visit your local MWR  and ITT Travel Offices at your closest military installation. There, you can purchase your amusement park tickets, book hotels, and learn more about the different vacations you can take with your family within the United States.
